The Department of Posts in India has a structured system for classifying its employees and posts. All positions are now grouped into three main categories: Group A, Group B, and Group C.

⚠️ Important Note on Classification vs. Pay

Your official group classification (A, B, or C) is determined by the functional post you hold, not your pay level.

  • Example: A Postal Assistant (Group C, Level 4) might receive a financial upgrade (through MACP) that places their salary at Level 6 (which is the pay scale for an HSG II post, a Group B position).
  • However, this employee will still be classified as Group C because they are still working as a Postal Assistant. The group classification does not change with a financial upgrade alone.
