Siachen Tragedy: Is the government ignoring military forces?

"Ever since the 3rd Pay Commission, there has been a lowering of the allowance of the military which has in turn reduced the quality of military and police services," Former Army chief VP Malik said. Senior journalist Ajai Shukla questioned the findings of the 7th Pay Commission and said, "They concluded that our military gets paid higher than civil servants which is a fabrication."

"Jawans feel that this government is not going to do anything for the military," Shukla added. BJP leader Aman Sinha reiterated BJP's commitment to the military and said that their government has the highest respect for the bravery and valour of a soldier. "I don't think anything more could be added to what this government has done for defence personnel," Sinha added. Ex-Defence Secretary Yogendra Narain spoke about the issues in the recommendations of the committee. "Several issues came up in front of committee of secretaries, some were resolved, and some are still there," he said.

Former Navy chief Arun Prakash questioned the representation of military forces in the committee, questioning the role of the defence secretary in the committe. "There is a line of thinking that defence secretary represents armed forces," he said. "The manner in which the cases have been represented before the government is flawed as the source of the doubts referred is flawed," Prakash added.
