- The act was passed in the Parliament on on 24th December,1986 (68/1986)
- Published in the Gazette of India on 26th December, 1986.
- The Minister in charge of the consumer affairs in the Central Government is the member of consumer protection councils
- It is enacted by Parliament in the Thirty-seventh Year of the Republic of India
- The provisions of Chapters I, II and IV of this Act have come into force in the whole of India except the State of Jammu and Kashmir on 15-4-1987.
- The provisions of Chapter III of this Act have come into force in the whole of India except the State of Jammu and Kashmir on 1-7-1987
