Sub: Declaration of Closed Holiday on 15th January 2025 on account of Makara Sankranti in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana – reg.

Respected Madam,

We are forwarding herewith representations received from the Telangana and Andhra Pradesh Circles on the subject cited above.

It is submitted that the Governments of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have declared 15th January 2025 as a public holiday on account of Makara Sankranti, in accordance with traditional observance and Panchangam. The festival is culturally and socially observed on the said date across both States.

However, it is reported that in certain Central Government establishments, based on the decisions of local Central Government Employees Welfare Coordination Committees, 14th January 2025 has been declared as the Closed Holiday, leading to an anomaly.

The Postal employees and other Central Government staff in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have represented that observance of the holiday on the actual festival day alone would enable meaningful participation in the festival, in harmony with local customs. Uniformity with State-declared holidays would ensure administrative convenience and employee satisfaction alike.

In view of the above facts, and considering the cultural significance of Makara Sankranti in these regions, the request for declaring 15th January 2025 as the Closed Holiday, in place of 14th January 2025, merits sympathetic consideration.

We, therefore, request that the matter may kindly be examined at the appropriate level and necessary consent issued to declare 15th January 2025 as the Closed Holiday for Andhra Pradesh and Telangana Circles, accepting the representations forwarded.

With regards,

Yours faithfully,

C. K. Subramani
