Subject: Expansion of eligibility criteria under Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI) – reg.

The undersigned is directed to state that Director General of Postal Services, Department of Posts in exercise of the powers conferred under Chapter XIV of the Post Office Regulations, 2024 read with Office Memorandum No. 29-26/2024-LI dated 23.01.2025 decided to expand the eligibility criteria for Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI).

2. Accordingly, in addition to persons permanently residing in rural areas, any person maintaining an operative Savings Bank Account with a Post Office Savings Bank or any Scheduled Bank in India shall also be eligible to purchase Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI), subject to compliance with the applicable provisions governing RPLI.

3. "Operative Savings Bank Account" shall mean a Savings Bank Account that is active, KYC-compliant and not classified as dormant, inoperative, frozen, blocked or closed. The accepting authority shall verify the operative status of the account based on prescribed documentary evidence before acceptance of the proposal. (SOP is attached herewith)

4. All existing underwriting requirements, eligibility conditions, including age limits, sum assured limits and other provisions governing Rural Postal Life Insurance shall continue to apply without any relaxation. Circles shall ensure proper verification of eligibility and monitor the business procured under this criterion in accordance with the instructions issued by the Directorate.

These instructions shall come into force with immediate effect until further orders.
