Subject: Circulation of Clarification on the Properties and Usage of Aadhaar by Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).

This office has received a communication (D.O. No. 13065/1/2024-AUTH-I HQ/C-14500/2797 dated October 8, 2025) from the UIDAI regarding the properties and permissible usage of the Aadhaar number.

The UIDAI has provided the following clarifications:

(i) Aadhaar may be used to establish identity subject to authentication or offline verification.

(ii) Aadhaar is not proof of citizenship or domicile.

(iii) Aadhaar is not proof of date of birth and must not be used to conclusively establish it.

The directive requests that this information be circulated to all concerned for guidance and displayed on the notice boards of all Post Offices.
