Subject: Rationalization of Branch Post Offices – reg.

This is regarding Rationalization of Branch Post Offices.

As per approved Postal Network as on 31.03.2025 which is based on Circle’s report, there are 1,39,908 BOs in the country (including 2,708 Urban BOs) (Annex - I).

It has been noticed that many Urban BOs have become dysfunctional / non relevant due to expansion of postal network in nearby areas or for other operational reasons. Thus, there is a scope for rationalization of the Branch Post Offices (relocation, merger, redeployment, etc.) as per the requirement of local populace.

It is therefore requested to review the network of BOs in the Circles (particularly Urban BOs) and the details of BOs feasible for the rationalization may be informed to this division in the prescribed format by 21.11.2025 (Annex – II). The Requirement of BOs, if any, in the Circle may also be conveyed, so that redeployment of BOs amongst Circles, can be reviewed at this division without affecting the overall postal network.
