The Union Cabinet has officially approved the constitution of the 8th Central Pay Commission (8th CPC), marking the formal commencement of its work to review and revise the salaries, allowances, and pensions for central government employees and pensioners.

This commission is tasked with providing recommendations for a new pay structure, which will impact millions of central government employees and pensioners.

 

  • Primary Mandate: To conduct a comprehensive review of the current pay, allowances, and pension structure for central government employees and pensioners, and to recommend changes.

  • Timeline: The Commission is allotted 18 months from its date of constitution to submit its final report, with the provision to submit interim recommendations on specific matters.

  • Scope of Review: The review will holistically consider economic conditions, fiscal space, the financial implications for state governments, and pay parity with the private sector and Central Public Sector Undertakings (CPSUs).

  • Impact: The Commission's recommendations will directly impact approximately 50 lakh (5 million) serving employees and 69 lakh (6.9 million) pensioners.
